This may sound like a bit of a contradiction, but in actual fact you’re looking for a place where the competition is low and your relevance and importance are very high. This is pretty obvious but it is also a journey of discovery that you need to engage in, so as to discover where you are going to fit and into which little slot that no one else has thought about.

Question one – are you famous?

Question two – what do you think you sell?

Question three – what does Joe public think you sell?

Take these three questions and the fact that people are using, on average, four and a half words in a search phrase and that over 70% of search phrases have no exact match to the indexed search phrase, you could be on a winning wicket.

What do we mean when we say you’re on a winning wicket? Well think about it in this fashion. If your competitors are not competing for the search phrases that you have identified for your industry, then you should be dominating that space.

With traditional sales and marketing, we used to go and knock on doors, visit people, talk to them and build relationships. Once we understood what they want we were then able to provide a far better service. Today we look at statistics and data. We forget that people are still people. People want a hug and crave being touched. This is why there are so many dating sites. If we didn’t want to touch, to meet people, to do business with people, then there would be no social media.

There would be no need to meet people or find a partner because technology would. Why would we need video? We could just use words, but we don’t because we need visual stimulation, we want to see, to smell, to engage. We all engage people. We need to understand that people want to engage with us, take a walk through the malls, look around, shop around and just talk to a store owner and engage with somebody.

If people want to engage with other people so badly, we need to use the tools that are out there to help them engage with you and your business. Tools such as search engine optimization and website design.

When you find someone who matches this criteria, bookmark their websites, go through their content and spend time learning about the business models that these coaches talk about. These coaches have spent a lot of time testing and implementing various business models online. The articles and the videos they produce are pure gold. You can learn a lot from their mistakes. Most are willing to share their mistakes with you in an attempt to help you avoid making the same mistakes.

However most of these coaches also sell e-books and guides for varying prices. I recommend avoiding the purchase of these guides because often the information contained may be outdated or too hard to implement (I know I’m upsetting some of them right now just by saying this)! I am not generalizing every internet marketing coach, but you need to make money first and then invest the money on e-books and related services. That is probably the number one thing I repeat to my clients over and over – “only purchase other products once you have made some money from using what you have.” Otherwise you just end up in the “Shiny Object Syndrome” again (which I have covered before).

Test, Fail and finally succeed – Every internet marketer who has made money online was never scared to implement their ideas. Avoid procrastination and start producing content and market a product. You will fail several times. But in the end, if you do not give up and you continue trying, you will succeed. The mistakes you make along the way will help you save thousands of dollars in the future. Once you get a handle on things, you will no longer feel scared to implement your ideas. You will also learn more about what business models work and what does not work in your particular online niche.

Don’t you think that the issue in people selling other people’s products is clear? People want anonymity. They want to sell something without having to put their picture on the web. This is silly. Wait a minute – if you simply reversed the role, would YOU buy from someone who had something to hide? The whole idea about affiliate marketing is that people have forgotten that they need to be doing more “affiliating” than they do “marketing”.

3. UnCreativity – The Same-ol’ same-‘ol

Someone says “do a report” and you do it. Someone else says “use a drop cap” and you use it. I don’t mean to put down such information. I do believe that it has been useful to some extent. But my question is… how do YOU know?

The big irony is that the report entitled “The Death Of Internet Marketing” was being spread using the exact same mistakes that it talks about in the report itself! You see, the truth is you might be able to pull off the same stunt a couple of times, but on the third attempt… nah.

You cannot (and should not) re-use methods developed by other people. The ideas are already passé the moment they go out on the net – after people use it over and over, it’s like a degrading gene pool. If you want to do something outstanding, then innovate a little. It’s the small innovative tweak that gets people to smirk, nod their heads and say ‘wow, that was brilliant’.

If you don’t know, then you won’t know the foundational principles of how people react to your writings, reports, etc. It’s essential for you to be able assess their reactions and how they take action based on what you say, and to be able to do this well.

If you are just doing cut and paste strategies, sure you can work with your list for a while, but you are still not cultivating a relationship with them. You are merely overloading them with information.

Key lesson: If you are attempting to breach the internet marketing stronghold, you need to have far more than just used tactics and strategies. You have to think. You have to innovate. More on this later.

1. Quality of products: no standards of assessment

What else did Mike say? He mentioned that many people are buying and buying into opportunities then heading off in all different directions. I see this happening right in front of my very own eyes. I’ve mentioned this several times in my internet marketing seminars. But the issue is, so what?

You need to be able to assess the quality of something. How well you can assess the quality depends on the level of the user. I mean a complete newbie will hardly be able to provide an effective evaluation from an internet marketing perspective. In addition, there is also a growing trend for internet marketers to provide rewards for testimonials. This is hardly a fair judge of a product.
